What A Race!!
04/30/01
Dave stepped into the number 70 Falcon Motorsports Formula Atlantic for his
first National race ever on Sunday. He was up against some fierce competition with last
years fifth place Runoffs finisher, David Vande Berg, beating him for the pole by
two tenths of a second. Nevertheless, a good start allowed Wilcox to beat Vande Berg into
turn one. He continued to lead for two laps when Vande Berg looked underneath and
completed a beautiful pass into turn 10.
Traffic became a factor after only a few laps when Wilcox was hung up behind slower
traffic allowing Vande Berg to pull a six second lead. This lead didnt last long as
Wilcox began to turn on the heat with 15 minutes left in the race. He caught Vande Berg
and passed him on the inside of turn two, but couldnt quite make it stick going up
the hill to turn four.
Several other attempts to pass were made by Wilcox with less than a second separating
the two for the remainder of the race. In the end, Vande Berg took the checkered with
Wilcox less than a second behind.
When asked about the race, Wilcox commended Vande Berg on an excellent drive and a
clean race. "I felt comfortable racing that close to him because we both gave each
other plenty of racing room." He also thanked the Falcon Motorsports crew for doing
such a good job setting the car up for the race.
